Remove skin tags with precise, non-surgical treatment

About Skin Tag Treatment

Skin tags are common benign growths that can develop on various areas of the face and body over time. CryoPen® treatment provides a precise method for removing these lesions by applying a controlled jet of cold directly to the targeted area, helping to restore a smoother skin surface.

At VL Aesthetics in Carlisle, your consultation is carried out by an experienced practitioner, who will assess the skin tag and determine whether CryoPen® is appropriate. Designed by doctors and certified by both the FDA and CE, the device uses cryotherapy technology to freeze and remove lesions with accuracy. Individual applications typically last between five and twenty-five seconds, with most patients reporting only mild, brief discomfort.

Treatments take place within a medically regulated clinical setting where safety, hygiene, and careful technique remain the priority. Book a consultation today to discuss whether CryoPen® treatment is suitable for you.

Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths that typically appear on areas where the skin folds, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin, and under the breasts. They are made of collagen and blood vessels and are completely harmless but can become irritated or cosmetically bothersome.

Cryotherapy, also known as cold therapy, involves the use of extremely low temperatures in medical treatments. For skin tag removal, we use CryoPen® cryotherapy, a precise and effective method that targets the skin tag with nitrous oxide (N₂O). This rapid freezing process cuts off the blood supply, causing the skin tag to shrink and fall off naturally.

More specifically, the CryoPen® delivers a highly targeted jet of nitrous oxide (-127°C) to the skin tag. This freezes the intercellular fluid, rupturing the cell membrane and destroying the unwanted tissue.

The procedure consists of three main stages:

  1. First Freeze Cycle: The applicator is held as close as possible to the skin imperfection and is moved towards and away from it very quickly. Depending on the size and depth of the targeted tissue, this process can take between 1-30 seconds.
  2. Thaw: After the first freeze cycle, the tissue is allowed to thaw for approximately 30 seconds.
  3. Second Freeze Cycle: The second freeze cycle will then begin. This time, the tissue will freeze faster (at a rate of approximately 1mm / 5s) and the undesired cells will be fully destroyed.
  • Fast and precise – Targets only the skin tag with minimal impact on surrounding skin.
  • Non-invasive – No cutting, burning, or stitches.
  • Minimal discomfort – Quick treatment with little to no downtime.
  • Low risk of scarring – Natural healing with smooth skin results.

The treatment itself is relatively painless, with most patients reporting an anaesthetic effect from the extreme cold temperature. You might however, experience a very mild discomfort that feels similar to a stinging nettle. This sensation can reoccur for a few minutes after the procedure is finished, and may be accompanied by slight itchiness in the treated area.

The duration of the treatment will depend on the size and thickness of the targeted tissue. Cryopen® freezes at an approximate rate of 1mm per 5 seconds, with a maximum freezing depth of 3-6mm. As such, the treatment time usually varies between 1-30 seconds.

Most skin tags require only one session. However, larger or stubborn tags may need a follow-up treatment after 4 to 6 weeks if any tissue remains.

For most skin conditions, the results will be permanent. During your consultation, we will talk you through the results you can expect.

  • The treated area may appear red or slightly swollen for a few hours.
  • A small scab or blister may form over the next few days.
  • The skin tag will darken, dry out, and fall off naturally within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • The skin will heal gradually, typically leaving no visible marks.

In very rare cases, some light scarring may be visible. To help avoid this, please remember to not pick at the crust that will form over the treatment area.

CryoPen® is a safe and controlled treatment, but temporary redness, blistering, or mild irritation can occur. In rare cases, slight pigmentation changes (lighter or darker patches) may develop but usually fade over time.

If you have any concerns, please ask us during your consultation.

Yes. CryoPen® is clinically proven and cleared by both the FDA and CE - a status attributed to only the most effective products.

Most people (18+) are suitable for treatment. However, it may not be recommended if you:

  • Have a history of keloid scarring.
  • Have poor circulation or healing issues.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (as a precaution).
  • Have an active skin infection or irritation in the treatment area.

There are generally no limitations to activities, as long as you protect the treated area from any damage or abrasion. Swimming and showering is also not a problem.

  • Avoid picking or scratching the treated area.
  • Keep the skin clean and dry—no harsh skincare products.
  • Protect from sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ to prevent pigmentation changes.
  • Avoid swimming, saunas, or excessive sweating for 24-48 hours.

Several cryotherapy devices are commonly used for skin lesion removal, including:

  • CryoPen® – A high-precision, medical-grade device that delivers controlled nitrous oxide for targeted freezing with minimal risk to surrounding skin.
  • FreezPen® – Similar to CryoPen®, but often considered less refined in its delivery system.
  • Histofreezer® – A more basic cryotherapy option, typically used in GP surgeries, but less precise and not as powerful.
  • Liquid nitrogen sprays and cotton swabs – Often used in clinics and hospitals but lack the precision and control of dedicated handheld devices like CryoPen®.

Why is CryoPen® the best choice?

CryoPen® stands out due to its precision, safety, and effectiveness:

  • Highly targeted treatment – Freezes only the lesion, protecting surrounding healthy skin.
  • Consistent, controlled freezing – Delivers nitrous oxide at an optimal temperature for effective removal without unnecessary skin damage.
  • Minimal discomfort, faster healing – Unlike some traditional cryotherapy methods, CryoPen® reduces the risk of blistering and scarring.
  • No downtime – Quick treatments with little to no aftercare required.

For fast, safe, and precise skin tag removal, CryoPen® offers superior results compared to other cryotherapy devices.

Yes. At your consultation we can organise a payment plan that suits you.
